Wade Richter and Ranger at Second Watch K9 Rescue

WADE RICHTER & RANGER ARMY K9 HANDLER 2000–2012 · FOUNDER, SECOND WATCH K9 RESCUE

Who’s Teaching You

12 YEARS TRAINING ARMY DOGS. THEN I MET THE ONES NOBODY HAD TAUGHT.

I’m Wade Richter. From 2000 to 2012 I was a Military Working Dog handler in the U.S. Army, out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Three deployments: Iraq in 2005, Afghanistan in 2009 and again in 2011. My partner for most of it was Kaiser, an 80-pound German shepherd who searched roads for explosives. When Kaiser heard his name, he turned. Every time. That wasn’t luck. That was a routine we ran every single day.

Here’s what most people get wrong about Army dogs: they aren’t trained with fear. A dog that’s scared of his handler won’t work under gunfire. They’re trained with short sessions, clear signals, a real paycheck for getting it right, measured food and enough rest. That’s the whole secret.

In 2014 I opened Second Watch K9 Rescue in Clarksville, Tennessee. Since then I’ve pulled 312 dogs off the euthanasia list, and 297 of them went home to families. Almost every surrender form says the same thing: “unmanageable,” “bolter,” “too much dog.” Not one of them was born that way. Their owners just never had anyone show them how.

So I wrote it down. The same routine I ran with Kaiser, rebuilt for a family dog and 10 minutes a day.

“This is Ranger. He came to us at 14 months with a form that said ‘too much dog.’ Today he’s my demo dog for every drill in these manuals. He didn’t need a miracle, my friend. He needed a routine.” · Wade Richter

1 · TRAIN HIM (MANUALS 1–3)

Short daily drills that teach him to walk beside you, come back the first time, and stay calm when the doorbell rings or another dog walks by.

2 · FEED HIM (MANUAL 4)

How I read a dog food bag in 60 seconds, how much really goes in the bowl, and what my dogs get every morning for their joints, gut and coat.

3 · KEEP HIM (THE 14-DAY TRACKERS)

A simple sheet on your fridge so you see progress day by day and fix small problems before they turn into big ones.

Why Your Dog Doesn’t Listen (Yet)

IF WALKS FEEL LIKE A WAR, IT’S NOT YOUR DOG. IT’S A REFLEX. AND YOU CAN SWITCH IT OFF.

Most owners are told to pull harder, say “come” louder, and trust the feeding chart on the bag. In the Army, we’d never do any of that. Here are the four mistakes I see behind almost every surrender form, and what I do instead.

01

THE WALK BECOMES WAR.

Pull a dog backward and his body automatically pushes forward. It’s a reflex, like your knee jumping when the doctor taps it. So every time you pull back and keep walking anyway, you’re paying him to pull.

WHAT WADE DOES INSTEAD: STOP PAYING FOR THE PULL. PAY FOR EVERY LOOK BACK. (MANUAL 1)

02

“COME” MEANS THE FUN IS OVER.

He comes in the kitchen, then ignores you at the park. Why? Because at the park, “come” means the leash goes back on and the fun ends. To him, coming back is a bad deal. And a dry biscuit can’t beat a squirrel.

WHAT WADE DOES INSTEAD: A NEW EMERGENCY WORD THAT ONLY EVER MEANS THE BEST THING IN HIS DAY. (MANUAL 2)

03

ONE BAD DAY CHANGES EVERYTHING.

A lunge on the sidewalk or a snap at a guest leaves you shaking. Most of the time it isn’t aggression. It’s fear, frustration or hidden pain. And no dog can learn anything once he’s past his breaking point.

WHAT WADE DOES INSTEAD: A 60-SECOND PLAN FOR THE BAD MOMENT, THEN WORK AT A DISTANCE WHERE HE CAN STILL THINK. (MANUAL 3)

04

THE BOWL GETS IGNORED.

A dog can walk like a soldier and still slow down at seven. The chart on most bags overfeeds, treats add up fast, and extra weight costs dogs good years. An Army dog’s food is measured every day. Yours deserves the same.

WHAT WADE DOES INSTEAD: READ THE BAG IN 60 SECONDS. PORTION BY HIS RIBS, NOT THE CHART. (MANUAL 4)

Field Reports · From The Shelter Yard

IF IT WORKS ON A SHELTER DOG WITH 48 HOURS LEFT, IT’LL WORK IN YOUR DRIVEWAY.

These drills weren’t invented in a puppy class. I use them on 70 to 90-pound dogs that were days away from the needle, because nobody had ever shown their owners how.

FIELD REPORT #01 · MANUAL 1: THE RESCUE WALK CLOCK: 48 HOURS LEFT

MOOSE: THE 90-LB SHEPHERD MIX LABELED “DANGEROUS ON LEASH”

Two years ago I got the call on Moose, a ninety-pound shepherd mix. Owner surrender. The paperwork said: “Unmanageable, dangerous on leash.”

One walk told me the truth. He wasn’t dangerous. Nobody had ever shown him how. He was choking himself at the end of the leash and dragging whoever held it. No prong collar. No wrestling. Just three simple drills, ten minutes, twice a day: stand still when he pulls, pay him when he looks back, and turn around calmly when he charges ahead.

“Day eleven, Moose walked a full city block on a loose leash, right past another dog, without a sound. A family with two kids took him home the next week. He didn’t need a miracle. He needed ten minutes a day.”

FIELD REPORT #02 · MANUAL 2: COME WHEN IT COUNTS CLOCK: 48 HOURS LEFT

BISHOP: THE 2-YEAR-OLD CATTLE DOG LABELED A “BOLTER”

Bishop’s surrender form said: “Bolter. Cannot be contained.” In the shelter yard, I unclipped his leash and called him. He looked right at me, then took off for the fence line. His old owner had done what most of us do: chase, shout, grab the collar, scold.

That night I put him on a 30-foot long line and started a brand-new emergency word that only ever meant real meat. Day 4, he turned before I touched the line. Day 16, a marathon runner watched him come back off a squirrel at sixty feet and signed the adoption papers that afternoon.

“Two months later she texted me a photo of Bishop, muddy and grinning: ‘Gate blew open in the wind. He was halfway to a deer. I used the emergency word. He spun around mid-stride and came back.’”

Is This For You?

BUILT FOR OWNERS WHO WANT TO DO IT RIGHT.

You don’t need experience. You need 10 minutes, a leash, and someone who’s already done it a few thousand times to tell you exactly what to do.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF:

  • ✓Walks feel like a chore. Your shoulder aches, he drags you ahead, and you cross the street when another dog comes.
  • ✓You don’t trust him off leash. Not with an open gate, a broken clip, or a squirrel in the park.
  • ✓You want to do it the way a pro would, and you can give it 10 minutes a day.
  • ✓You want him healthy and moving well into his senior years, without guessing in the pet store aisle.

DON’T BUY THIS IF:

  • ✕You want a magic button. This takes 10 minutes a day with the leash in your hand.
  • ✕You want to scare or punish him into behaving. That’s not how the Army does it, and it’s not how I do it.
  • ✕Your dog has seriously bitten someone or is sick right now. Start with your vet and a local pro. These manuals are the routine for after.

Why only $27? Because I don’t want price to be the reason a good dog runs out of chances. I can’t come to every driveway in America. These manuals can.

Before You Start

STRAIGHT ANSWERS TO HARD QUESTIONS.

My dog is already 4+ years old (or a rescue with bad habits). Is it too late?

No. Most of the 312 dogs I’ve pulled off the list were adults with years of bad habits. Moose was a grown 90-lb shepherd. Bishop was two. Dogs never stop learning. They keep doing whatever gets paid. Change the paycheck and the habit changes, at any age.

Why 4 manuals and not just a leash guide?

Because a dog that walks nicely can still bolt through an open gate, lose it when the doorbell rings, or slow down years early because of what’s in his bowl. In the Army, we never trained one piece of the dog. You get the whole routine in one place, instead of piecing it together from ten different trainers.

Do I have to read all 171 pages before I start?

No. Each manual opens with a 90-second brief and a 14-day plan. Read the first chapters of The Rescue Walk in 15 minutes tonight and run your first 10-minute session tomorrow morning.

What equipment do I need?

No shock collar, no prong collar, no gadgets. A regular 6-foot leash (the retractable one goes in the closet on day one), a flat collar or a front-clip harness, a treat pouch, and small soft treats. For the recall, a 30-foot long line, about $18 at any pet store.

Does The Fuel Protocol make me buy a specific dog food?

No. Brands change their recipes. The way you check a bag doesn’t. You’ll learn the 60-second label check, so you can flip over any bag in any store and know if it’s worth buying. I also show you the daily chew my own dogs get every morning for their joints, gut and coat.

What if my dog is 90+ lbs and stronger than me, or still a puppy?

Both are covered. Puppies under 6 months get shorter, play-based sessions. For big, strong dogs there’s a setup that gives you control without a fight, even if he outweighs you.

Will this fix serious aggression?

No book can promise that, and you should walk away from anyone who does. What The Bad Day Book gives you is the plan for the first 60 seconds, a chart to tell fear from pain from real aggression, the warning signs that mean the vet comes first, and what to look for in a local pro if you need one.

How does the guarantee work?
